PNC Grow Up Great and Detroit Public Schools Announce Programs For First-Ever Summer School for Area Pre-K Students

May 2010 - The PNC Foundation has announced a $2.1 million investment with the Detroit Public Schools Foundation, the Detroit Science Center and the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts to establish new programs in science and the arts for underserved preschool children in the Detroit Public Schools.

PNC's commitment leverages the experience of the three institutions to create new programs in preschool teacher training, add activities to enhance the arts and sciences curriculum of the Detroit Public Schools pre-k program and engage parents in their children's learning experiences.

The program will begin as a pilot in June when the Detroit Public Schools will offer its first-ever summer program for preschool students and will then continue into the school year. Following completion of the pilot, the program will continue for an additional two school years and will include an independent evaluation of its success.

  • Detroit Public Schools Foundation will appoint a program coordinator to oversee teacher training and coordinate instruction with the partners. In addition, it will provide classroom materials and technology components.
  • The Detroit Science Center will bring the resources of the center and the Detroit Children's Museum into the classrooms, and host a series of student field trips and family visits. Instruction will emphasize exploration and hands-on activities.
  • Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts will feature preschool students engaging in dramatic play. Family participation is encouraged. Instruction includes music awareness through the use of miniature and handmade instruments.

PNC Grow Up Great And Cleveland Arts Partners Collaborate To Help Underserved Preschoolers

March 2009 - The PNC Foundation announced Our Kids and the Arts - A Great Early Start, a $2 million investment in four Cleveland arts and cultural institutions to establish new programs and help underserved preschool children succeed in school and life. The grants will be shared among the Cleveland Museum of Art, The Cleveland Orchestra, PlayhouseSquare and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Through Our Kids and the Arts - A Great Early Start, PNC will support preschool teachers in making the arts - music, theatre, visual arts, and dance - come alive in the classroom. The goal is to prepare children for kindergarten and beyond as fully engaged, active learners.
